Cybersecurity: Rebuilding U.S.-EU Trust
Fixing the Damage Created by the Edward Snowden LeaksInternational collaboration to defend against cyber-attacks requires trust. Two years after the leaks that showed the U.S. National Security Agency spied on America's European allies, the U.S. and Europe still need to rebuild that trust, says Carsten Casper, a Gartner managing vice president based in Berlin.
"Losing this trust between partners for the processing of confidential data and intellectual property or ... personal data, that's a really critical thing; that's what we need to tackle: re-establishing this trust between partners," Casper says in an interview with Information Security Media Group at the Gartner Security and Risk Management Summit in National Harbor, Md.
In the interview, Casper:
- Explains why the number of breaches involving personally identifiable information is on the rise;
- Discusses the evolution of new risk-based privacy regulations in the European Union; and
- Addresses tensions created between the United States and its European allies resulting from the disclosure of U.S. spying activities by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
As managing vice president, Casper is responsible for the Gartner team covering digital workplace security and runs the advisory company's privacy and security initiatives.
