The New DDoS Industry

Arbor's Darren Anstee on Latest Trends, Research
When it comes to DDoS attacks, the hacktivists get all the headlines, but there is a robust service industry behind the scenes, supporting these sophisticated strikes, says Darren Anstee of Arbor Networks.

"Cybercrime is a very lucrative industry," Anstee says. "And as in all industries, service industries do spring up to help them.

"There are lots of services out there now that can be used to launch DDoS attacks for a variety of different purposes," Anstee adds.

Some of today's attacks are aimed solely to disrupt organizations. Others are used for extortion or to enable data theft or financial fraud.

In an interview recorded at Infosecurity Europe 2014, Anstee discusses:

  • DDoS trends Arbor is tracking;
  • How Arbor develops threat intelligence;
  • Which industry sectors and regions must improve information sharing efforts.

Anstee has over 15 years of experience in the pre-sales, consultancy and support aspects of telecom and security solutions. Currently in his eighth year at Arbor, Anstee specializes in customizing and supporting traffic monitoring and Internet threat detection and mitigation solutions for service providers and enterprises in the EMEA region. Prior to joining Arbor, he spent eight years working in both pre- and post-sales for core routing and switching product vendors.
