Dan Schiappa of Sophos on How Threat Landscape and Innovation Will Evolve Over Next Five Years
The Rise of Ransomware-as-a-Service

How will ransomware-as-a-service develop? What IoT exploits await the enterprise? Dan Schiappa of Sophos weighs in on how the cybersecurity threat landscape is likely to develop over the next five years.

The view starts with the evolution of malware - both the potency and the low-cost barrier to deploy it, says Schiappa, senior vice president and general manager, Sophos end-user and network security groups. He is specifically concerned about the dangerous potential of ransomware-as-a-service.

"The watershed moment for this is that it takes something that typically would have some technical skill necessary to be successful with, and it just puts it in the hands of the malintentioned, versus the technically malintentioned," Schiappa says. "We would certainly expect this trend to continue forward, and at this [low] cost it's going to arm many people to be very disruptive."

In an interview about the evolving threat landscape, Schiappa discusses:

  • The rise of ransomware-as-a-service;
  • How malware will evolve;
  • The future of endpoint security.

Schiappa is senior vice president and general manager, Sophos end-user and network security groups. In this role, he is responsible for the overall product strategy, product management, architecture, research and development, product quality and release plans for both groups, including recent innovations in next-generation endpoint and firewall products.
